Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that is found all over the world. The connection between fluoride and healthy teeth was made in the 1930’s when it was discovered that people who drank naturally fluoridated water had fewer cavities than people in other areas. When a child is growing, fluoride will strengthen their bones and their teeth during the formative years. In adults, regular doses of fluoride will keep teeth strong.
Are you getting enough fluoride? If your family is brushing twice a day using a toothpaste containing fluoride, and your city adds fluoride to your water supply, chances are good that you are getting all of the fluoride that you need. Fluorosis is a condition that occurs when a child gets too much fluoride which can cause spots and streaks on their permanent teeth when they come in. In many cases, fluorosis is not readily noticeable, and your dentist can easily correct any cosmetic issues.
During your regular dental appointment, your dentist will be able to determine if you have been getting enough fluoride. Fluoride supplements can be taken as a pill or as a fluoride rinse. Your dentist can also paint fluoride directly on your teeth, or can have you hold a tray containing a fluoride gel in your mouth.
